Modern architecture in Salzburg – contradiction in terms?
1 / X
From Baroque to Modernism
It all began with a vision: Salzburg – the Rome of the North! In the late 16th century, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau returned from Rome full of inspiration. Funded by the salt trade and shaped by Italian architects, he laid the foundation for Salzburg’s unique baroque center – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But Salzburg didn’t freeze in time. Since 2001, the Walk of Modern Art has brought bold contemporary sculptures into the heart of the old town.
On our art & architecture walk, we trace the spirit of Italianità, explore sacred and secular buildings across the ages, admire ‘art deco’ villas – and discover how well modern art fits into Salzburg’s historic setting.
To finish, we toast with a glass of Prosecco on a scenic bella terrazza.
Optional: a visit to the DomQuartier, once the power center of Salzburg’s prince-archbishops.
